November 28, 2022 – Flagler County Fire Rescue has been providing mutual aid since Saturday to the Florida Forest Service and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection – the lead response agencies – for a 4-acre brush and mulch fire in Favoretta that could continue to burn for days.
“This isn’t a large fire in terms of acreage, but the conditions and location are making it difficult to completely extinguish,” said Fire Rescue Chief Michael Tucker. “We have limited jurisdictional authority in the woods, but we are providing our resources as mutual aid to the Forest Service and the Department of Environmental Protection.”
The fire started about noon on Saturday at 295 County Road 200 – Arrow Materials, a company that collects brush to convert to mulch. A day later there was a re-flare that produced 30-foot flames and smoke.
“There was a lot of material on the property, all of which are fuels for fire,” Tucker said. “We have conditions that are ripe for a fire that smolders.”
Flagler County’s drone team will deploy at 10 a.m. Monday to look for hotspots.
“The best defense is a good offense, as they say,” Tucker said. “We are doing everything we can to get a handle on this so that it isn’t a lingering problem for neighbors in the area.”
Smoke warning signs were posted on U.S. 1 for the overnight hours.
