Towers to Tunnels Foundation was started in memory of Stephen Siller. A New York Firefighter who, on his day off on September 11th, 2001, geared up in full firefighter gear, and raced through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnels, all the way to the towers to help rescue people. He later gave up his life while working to save people at the towers.
The foundation raises money to help with many different programs, supporting communities across the country. The foundation serves to honor the memory of firefighter Siller, who above all strove to do good in this world.
One of the ways the foundation raises money is the Towers to Tunnels 5k run, walk and climb. This 5k is held annually in New York; it was also held this past Saturday in Palm Coast. The T2T Foundation and the City of Palm Coast held an annual Towers to Tunnels 5k event on February 4th from 8am – 11am in the Central Park at Town Center. Crowds cheered on the runners and walkers as they completed their 5k in honor of the fallen firefighters of 9/11. Participants in the race ran with badges that held the names of the fallen firefighters along with their photo.
Before the 5k started there was a small ceremony where Mayor Alfin, Sheriff Staly and a representative from the Palm Coast Fire Department were asked to speak. They talked about the T2T foundation, the future of the firefighters industry, how exactly T2T has helped communities around the country, and the Palm Coast Fire Departments Color Guard performed a flag presentation.
Sheriff Staly mentioned how the T2T foundation has helped our very own community. Sheriff Staly spoke about when Mayor Alfin’s brother, a Special Agent in the FBI, and his partner were murdered in the line of duty two years ago, the T2T foundation paid off the mortgages for the homes of the two murdered agents.
This 5k run helps to fund a foundation that is bringing communities together across the nation, and helping veterans and first responders who have been injured in the line of duty or even killed.
Keep your eyes peeled in early 2024 for the dates on the next T2T 5k Run, Walk and Climb event.
