Last week we met with the Turners; who are both local business owners in Flagler County. They also started a non-profit called Move to Improve Flagler. This non-profit is here to help at risk youth in our area. Our community coming together is a joyous affair, it shows how much our community cares about helping each other and supporting those in need and at risk in our area. Below you can read more about Move to Improve Flagler and their goals and visions for the future of our community.

What inspired you to start this non-profit? When was the project born into existence? When was it founded officially?
Yonette: “My Husband and I started Move to Improve Flagler in 2017. Growing up  we had field day in school  and we spent a lot of time outdoors. We felt like the kids nowadays did not spend a lot of time outside so we decided to start an organization where the kids would be able to participate in an outdoor field day. So Move to Improve Flagler started as that. At this time we realized that going back to school is very costly for parents so we decided to combine our field day with a backpack and school supply giveaway. We have done this event since 2017 with an exception of 2020 due to Covid. Every August we give away backpacks and school supplies. We have outdoor and indoor physical activities for kids grades K-12. “
What is the goal of this non-profit?
Yonette: ” Our goal is to increase access to specialized learning opportunities for at-risk young adults by providing the necessary resources, funds, and opportunities to increase self-sufficiency in our community.”
How do you hope to inspire the community?
Yonette: “We hope to inspire the community in a way that others will take the call to action to help with assisting our youth either by mentoring or putting programs in place to start to get them training whether it  be vocational training or knowledge with financial literacy. We hope to light the torch where others in our community will keep it  going and expand into other programs for the young adults in our community.”
What are your big fundraiser events?
Yonette: ” In the past we have done Golf tournaments for our big fundraiser. This year changed and decided to  host a Kentucky Derby themed fundraiser ” HORSES & HATS”. This  is an event that we feel that the community will really enjoy. We hope this will be our biggest fundraiser thus far so that we can raise the necessary funds to provide scholarships.”
How are ways the community can support this non-profit?
Yonette: “The community can support us by either making a donation to our non profit or attending the fundraiser.”
Where do you see this organization in 5 years? In 10 Years?
Yonette: ” In 5 -10 years I see our non profit giving out multiple scholarships. I hope to see the previous recipients out in the workforce making a decent living for themselves knowing that we made a difference in their lives.”
What are some of your short term goals with the organization?
Yonette: “Our short term goals are to organize more fundraisers to bring in more funds. To definitely keep the physical part of Move to Improve Flagler involved so more field days, more basketball tournaments, more activities to get the kids moving and physically fit.”
This is a great organization that really needs the communities help to grow. With everyone helping this organization out, it has the potential to change the lives of a lot of youth in our county.
