Dave and Jennifer are the proud owners of Backwater Cat Adventures, Palm Coast. They opened their “doors” on July 1st, and have been working hard since then to build their adventure business. They took the time to talk to us about their new business and what led them to starting it.

Dave told us that they got started during a couples get away. Jennifer told us Dave has always been adventurous and over the years has helped her to find her adventurous spirit. Dave told us about their get away, where they found Backwater Cat Adventures in Amelia Island. Dave said that after experiencing it, he and Jennifer tracked down the owner. “Once we found the owner, we sat down and talked over lunch, it was a 2 hour conversation. The owner said he had prayed to meet someone like us.” After talking with the owner and getting the ok to open up his own location in Palm Coast, Dave and Jennifer were able to start the chapter you see now. The owner has helped them along the way to get it all started and set everything up.

Dave said, “There have been varying degrees of crazy throughout the whole process, but the leap of faith, deciding to move forward with the business was probably the craziest moment so far.” Backwater Cat Adventure currently offers two types of tours, a short mid day tour which is about an hour and fifteen minutes, and this tour is offered 7 days a week. They also offer a two and a half hour tour in the mornings and sunsets. The tours currently go up the intracoastal and stop at the Matanzas Inlet.
We asked Dave about challenges they have faced. “My biggest challenge is being patient with the business. I want to see it explode today, but I know it takes time,” Dave told us. Jennifer said for her it is different, “The learning curve; making sure we are staying up to date on everything to do with customer safety while on the tours. We take our customer safety seriously, and we are always working hard to keep up with the latest safety information.”

“We would love to triple our business in the next year or two. I would like to be able to step out of my day job and run this business for my full time job. Being completely booked with three new boats; 11 new boats in our third year and another new location. We know those are big goals,” said Dave and Jennifer together.
Dave told us his favorite part of this business is sharing the joy of being on the water with his clients. “Seeing them light up, smile, even giggle with excitement is the best part of this,” said Dave. Sharing this adventure with family, friends and clients is something both Dave and Jennifer love doing every time they take someone out on the tours.
