The City of Palm Coast is being recognized as part of the 75th anniversary of the USTA Florida Tennis Trail. Palm Coast has a rich, lasting history in the tennis community. Dating back to 1969, when Dr. Norman Young, spokesperson for ITT/Levitt and Sons, proclaimed his intentions “to incorporate and merge the beautiful, balanced, and diverse environment that already existed in the area with the recreational interests of its prospective residents.”. Dr. Young helped instill a passion for community development through recreational activities like tennis, golf, and water sports.
In 1971, tennis started to flourish further, and by the end of 1974, residents joined together to form the Palm Coast Tennis Association. More recently, in 2010, the Palm Coast Tennis Center was recognized by the USTA as an “Outstanding Tennis Facility”. Home to the annual USTA M25 event, the Palm Coast Open, for over 10 years, and welcoming prominent coaches and players throughout the years, adding to the lush tennis history here in Palm Coast.
This brings us to the present day, excitement builds as we look to the future of tennis in Palm Coast with the completion of phase 2 of the Southern Recreation Center Project. On June 18, 2024, the City Council approved a grant agreement with the USTA, funding $700,000 to cover the construction of additional tennis courts. The Southern Recreation Center is a pristine facility that houses 10 tennis courts, and 12 pickleball courts. Soon, the first stadium court and 4 clay courts. From beginners to pros, there are programs and tournaments for all.
