Flagler County officials are notifying residents that there will be a brief closure of State Road A1A on or around August 22 – depending on the weather – from just north of State Road 100 to South 6th Street. The closure is only expected to be in effect for two to four hours and a detour will be in place.

The closure is necessary for public safety as equipment for the Army Corps of Engineers beach nourishment project is moved.

“We thought this move would happen on August 18, which is what has been shown on the FDOT flashing sign to inform the public, but Hurricane Ernesto is expected to create some big swells close to shore even though the storm will pass far from our coast,” said County Coastal Engineering Administrator Ansley Wren-Key. “We also expect the work will have to be paused for 24 to 48 hours this weekend.”

In preparation for the continued work, a portion of the boardwalk adjacent to State Road A1A will be removed and replaced with a temporary sand ramp for equipment access. Once the machinery and equipment are on the beach, ground mats and debris will be removed but the sand ramp will remain in place until the equipment is returned south for demobilization.

The boardwalk will be replaced at that time.

As always, residents are encouraged to use other areas of the beach and to be extremely cautious in the construction area.
