On August 15, 2024, the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 115 of Bunnell proudly presented its member, Sheriff Rick Staly, with the prestigious Five-Star Award. This is the highest honor that can be earned by any SAL Squadron member, given to those who demonstrate exceptional dedication.
The Five-Star Award is a gold-plated medal bearing the SAL emblem and the symbolism of the five points: Patriotism, Citizenship, Discipline, Leadership, and Legionism.

A guided facilities tour of the new FCSO Operations Center was held immediately after the award presentation, highlighting FCSO’s history dating back to 1917.
“It is an honor to have been chosen by my fellow SAL members to receive this very special recognition,” said Sheriff Staly. “SAL has a special meaning for me since my 9th generation cousin, William Hooper, signed the Declaration of Independence and served in the Continental Congress and my 9th generation great grandfather, General George Godfrey, served in the American Revolution while my father was in the Navy and served during Korea. I’m excited to continue working with the SAL in exemplifying what makes this organization special in our community.”
The Sons of the American Legion is a detachment of The American Legion, and its members are a mixture of veterans and non-veteran males who are descendants of veterans. They are from all walks of life, and range in age from those of children to those of great grandfathers and beyond.
