The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a $90,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. This funding will support the FCSO Community Policing Division’s initiative to reduce motorcycle crashes in Flagler County.
The grant will be used for overtime so the FCSO Traffic Unit can focus on enhancing motorcyclist safety. This includes purchasing speed measurement devices and implementing programs aimed at increasing safety and awareness among motorcyclists through high-visibility traffic enforcement, community education, and public outreach.
Between 2021 and 2023, Flagler County had a total of 223 motorcycle crashes on its roadways. Of these crashes, 24 resulted in serious injuries, and another 24 crashes were fatal. Flagler County has increased motorcycle traffic during popular events like Bike Week, Biketoberfest, and Triketoberfest, which are currently taking place.
Deputies will also focus on educating drivers committing violations dangerous to motorcyclists and scooters, while also educating and enforcing dangerous violations committed by motorcyclists.
“Our goal is to ensure the safety of our community, which includes reducing the number of motorcycle crashes in Flagler County,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Just today a serious motorcycle collision occurred on Matanzas Woods Parkway. Many motorcyclists live, work, and enjoy everything Flagler County has to offer. This grant will assist us in our mission to keep all drivers safe on Flagler County roadways.”
