On October 24th, 2024, the Flagler Cadet Squadron had its Assumption of Charter ceremony, officially recognizing it as a squadron here in Flagler County. The squadron is overseen by Captain Nicole Graves, a senior member of the Civil Air Patrol. When the local chapter started this last June of 2024, it had 6-9 members and has since grown to a squadron of over 30 cadets. The Assumption of Charter ceremony was held at the Hammock Community Center on Mala Compra Road, with cadets, families, and local officials in attendance. Among those in attendance were Colleen Conklin, one of the directors at Embry Riddle, Col. Jack Howell, retired USMC, EOC Director Jonathon Lord, many Civil Air Patrol senior members, and a USAF representative.
The Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported non-profit organization that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). CAP is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes members from all backgrounds. This organization not only has adult senior members who are often activated during emergencies to offer assistance in a variety of forms, but they also offer an extensive cadet program for children as young as 12 years old.
Following the Assumption of Charter, cadets who finished the necessary work were given promotions. Over ten new cadets received their first promotion from cadet basic to cadet airman, along with many of the more established cadets who were also given their new ranks, achievements, and awards. One senior member was surprised with a promotion, and EOC Director Jonathon Lord was also recognized by the new squadron for his support of the program locally.
