On November 8, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received notification from the Federal Bureau of Investigations about a tip of a possible school shooting threat.

Deputies identified the student as 16-year-old Lauren Schartel attending Flagler Palm Coast High School.  The School Resource Deputy at the high school was immediately notified and quickly located the student, ensuring there were no weapons on campus while other deputies were responding.

After being questioned, the student admitted to making a post on social media using the phrase, “I forgot to use setting spray I’m gonna shoot up the school.”

Schartel was arrested for a Written/Electronic Threat to Kill or Bodily Harm Another. The student was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility for processing and released to parents per the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.

“The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats seriously, especially ones made towards a school or its student body,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Parents, once again, I implore you to be the Sheriff in your home and talk to your kids. What a stupid comment to make because you forgot the spray to go over your makeup. Explain to them that stupid comments will get you arrested if you make a threat. We don’t like arresting your child, but we will ensure Flagler County students are safe. I want to thank the FBI for sending us the tip so our deputies could act swiftly and make an arrest.”
