The City of Palm Coast is proud to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing individuals and organizations that have profoundly shaped the community’s identity and enriched its cultural fabric. This year, we spotlight three key contributors to Palm Coast’s history and legacy.
Shirley Chisholm: A groundbreaking figure in American politics, Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress. Her trailblazing career and advocacy for equality inspired generations. Chisholm spent her later years in Palm Coast, and her legacy is honored through the Shirley Chisholm Trail along Pine Lakes Parkway, unveiled on November 30, 2022, serving as a lasting tribute to her influence. The City of Palm Coast proclaims November as Shirley Chisolm Month annually. Learn more about the Shirley Chisolm Trail by clicking here.
African American Cultural Society (AACS): For decades, the African American Cultural Society (AACS) has been a vital part of Palm Coast’s cultural landscape. The AACS is dedicated to preserving African American heritage and offers educational programs, artistic events, and community initiatives celebrating diversity and history. The center has hosted several nationally recognized exhibits, including Smithsonian showcases, underscoring its commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding.
African American Entrepreneurs Association (AAEA): Headquartered in Daytona Beach, the AAEA is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering the African American community through entrepreneurship. By offering resources such as mentoring, workshops, and micro-financing opportunities, the AAEA helps create pathways to economic growth and business success. Their efforts are a testament to the city’s spirit of innovation and collaboration.
