The Sons of the American Legion is a detachment of The American Legion, and its members are a mixture of veterans and of non-veteran males that are descendants of veterans. They are from all walks of life, and range in age from those of children to those of great grandfathers and beyond.

Each such detachment is assigned a Squadron number, and is tasked with supporting veterans and their families, as well as the communities in which they serve. While this has its own intangible rewards, other rewards are occasionally given to SAL members who demonstrate exceptional dedication. Of these, the 5-Star Award is the highest honor that can be earned by any SAL Squadron member.

At 6:00 PM August 15, 2024, SAL Squadron 115 of Bunnell will proudly present its member Sheriff Rick Staly with this special award in a free and open-to-the-public event, hosted by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) located at the FCSO Operations Center, 61 Sheriff EW Johnston Dr, Bunnell, FL. Parking is also free.

The event format will be familiar to those who have served in any capacity, including an Honor Guard posting flags and placing a POW/MIA soldier memorial as attendees salute the Colors, and a bugler plays Taps, followed by a Pledge of Allegiance. The award presentation will follow in the same format.

It is not just about one individual or group. It is a rare opportunity for Members and Veterans of all Service Branches and Groups, as well as Sons of the American Legion, Sons of AMVETS, Law Enforcement, First Responders, Service Clubs, Public Figures and others who serve the Community to come together and be recognized in unity.

Please join us and notable community members to help make this an even more memorable event. Seating and parking are limited. So, please plan to arrive no later than 5:30 PM on the day of the event. General admission will close promptly at 6:00 PM.

A guided facilities tour of the new FCSO operations Center will be held immediately following the award presentation and will highlight law enforcement memorabilia dating back to 1917.

You can become a SAL member on-site. If you are interested in becoming a Sons of the American Legion Squadron 115 member or a member of the American Legion Post 115, its Auxiliary or its Riders motorcycle group, an information table and applications will be available at this event.
