Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed Derek Barrs to the Flagler School Board, filling the seat vacated by Sally Hunt’s recent resignation. Barrs, a seasoned professional with a background in state law enforcement, brings valuable insights to the board, particularly in the area of safety, as the district continues working toward enhanced student support and achievement.

Superintendent LaShakia Moore welcomed Barrs’s appointment, noting that his background in public service aligns well with the district’s priorities. “We’re looking forward to the experience Mr. Barrs will bring to the board,” Moore said. “His commitment to next-generation learning environments and student success is a strong fit with our mission here in Flagler.”

Sally Hunt leaves the board with a track record of advocacy for equitable resources and academic growth. As Barrs steps in, the board is fully prepared to address the priorities of the district, maintaining its focus on student outcomes, safety, and effective communication within the Flagler County community.

With Barrs’s appointment, the board is now fully staffed and ready to support Flagler Schools’ mission of excellence across the district. Replacing the outgoing six-term board members Dr. Colleen Conklin and Cheryl Massaro are Janie Ruddy and Lauren Ramirez, who were recently elected to their seats.
