Anticipating rises in travel and holiday shopping, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is increasing patrols in residential areas, business districts, and roadways throughout Flagler County during Thanksgiving weekend.

The holiday season brings some of the busiest travel days of the year, so Flagler County residents can expect to see increased vehicle traffic throughout the holiday and weekend, particularly on major roadways such as Interstate 95, State Road 100, U.S. Highway 1, and Palm Coast Parkway. Deputies will provide an increased presence on roadways experiencing high traffic volume, and members of the FCSO Traffic and Motors Unit will conduct enforcement details to target drunk driving, seatbelt violations, speeding, and aggressive driving.

Sheriff Rick Staly encourages residents to plan their travel ahead of time and practice patience on the roadway. “Nobody wants to be late to Thanksgiving dinner, but getting in a wreck or being pulled over because you were going too fast will delay your Thanksgiving feast longer,” said Sheriff Staly. “The most important thing to do is to arrive safely, so remember to give yourself plenty of time and practice safe driving this holiday.”

Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season mean the potential for increased criminal activity. Deputies will have increased visibility and patrols in business districts to stop potential criminals from preying on Flagler County shoppers or businesses. This includes the deployment of our Bike Unit and foot patrols in business parking lots and shopping areas.

Along with the increased presence, Sheriff Staly encourages shoppers to do their part to keep from becoming easy targets for criminals. “There are many simple things you can do to keep yourself and your stuff safe when you’re out shopping,” added Sheriff Staly. “When you’re in the store, always be aware of your surroundings, keep your purse or wallet close by, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. And once you’ve bought something, store it in your trunk and remember to lock your car. Don’t leave your purchases, or any other valuables, in plain view.”

The FCSO Operations Center in Bunnell and District 2 Office in Palm Coast will be closed on Thursday, November 28, and Friday, November 29, and will reopen to the public on Monday, December 2. The FCSO Communications Center remains open 365 days a year, and residents should call 9-1-1 for emergencies or the non-emergency line at 386-313-4911 for non-emergencies.

Sheriff Staly and the men and women of FCSO wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday and weekend.
