FCSO responded to a residence in Bunnell regarding a stabbing on January 10th, 2023. The victim had said two men had broken in and a physical altercation took place, which led to the victim being stabbed.
The Major Case Unit for the FCSO was able to obtain a felony arrest warrant for one Richard Westervelt on February 7th, 2023; the warrant was for Burglary Wile Armed, Burglary with Assault or Battery, and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon. It was also determined that Westervelt was also listed as a Prison Release Reoffender, thus adding to his penalties.
FCSO Major Case Unit and the Real Time Crime Center, were able to determine that Westervelt was at an Ormond Beach location, and Volusia County’s Narcotics Task Force and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Team located Westervelt’s residence on February 16th, 2023. Westervelt fled from the VSO originally, however he was caught after being Tasered. Westervelt had a large amount of narcotics on his person at the time of his apprehension.
He was taken in to the Volusia Detention Center on the Flagler warrant and the following charges were added: Trafficking Methamphetamine (28-200grams), Trafficking Fentanyl (4-14grams), Possession of Suboxone, Possession of Cannabis over 20 Grams, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting and Officer Without Violence.

releasee reoffender,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Another dirtbag thought he could hide in a nearby county
and avoid arrest but he learned the hard way about the long-arm reach of the law. A big thank you to
the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in taking him
into custody and getting his poison off the streets too.”
