October 17th, at 6pm, Flagler School Board held their monthly business meeting, and during this meeting LaShakia Moore was officially sworn in as Superintendent of Flagler Schools. While many had already been referring to Ms. Moore as Superintendent, it wasn’t until Tuesday night that the contract was voted in by the board and Ms. Moore was officially sworn in.
During the meeting, the board also voted to accept the contract and loan option for the new school buses, as well as heard spotlights from the Flagler Education Foundation and FTC on their new health literacy classes.
Public comment section of the meeting included members of the community who spoke out about the cell tower on FPC grounds and the health concerns regarding that. Donelle Evensen’s father stood up to speak out about the administration’s lack of support for his daughter in the aftermath of the Bunnell incident, as well as stating that he believed they should stand up and leave the Bible in the library. Once commenter came up to ask questions regarding the missing $700,000 that has disappeared due to a cyber crime. She understood her questions cannot be answered while the FBI is still investigating it, but wanted her questions voiced nonetheless.
The meeting concluded with congratulations from the Board members to the new Superintendent Moore. Board member Chong stated that, “the Bible is not going anywhere, so please don’t listen to the misinformation.” She went on to share her disappoint regarding the fight that happened earlier this week. She told parents that the schools cannot raise their kids. Board Member Furry took his time to try and respond to commenters, asking Superintendent Moore to give a briefing on the cyber crime, and to talk about the Guardian program, which he is a supporter of.
Board member Hunt echoed the congratulations to as she put it, “Super Moore”. Hunt also explained again why her vote on the Guardian program was a no. Vice Chair Conklin brought up that it was a good thing they re-zoned the schools and that Matanzas in being expanded, but she told the board that if the developing continues like this they will be back at capacity sooner than later. Conklin stated she does want to hear more about the issues and potential health concerns around cell towers on the school grounds.
Chair Massaro spoke out about the school violence, and stated that parents have to be involved and active in their children’s lives. Superintendent Moore discussed the fraud is an active and ongoing investigation. They are working with the bank, local law enforcement officers, as well as the federal officers. There are new procedures are being put in place to ensure it does not happen to Flagler Schools again.
